Russell assisted Missionary Larry Myers of Mexico Ministries with a team from the Detroit, MI area. The group consisted of 11 men from Zion Church under the leadership of Pastor Scott L.

On the first day of work, the group left Chenalho for a 31 mile drive to the Tzotzil village of Seclum. Little did we know due to the horrible road conditions that it would take us 5 1/2 hrs to get to the village. After having to push the van in many different areas on the rugged, muddy, mountain roads, we had no choice but to abandoned it. Two local villagers were left to stay with the van until we returned. All the team had to ride in back of the two pick up trucks.

Upon our arrival Bro. Larry made the decision for the group to spend the night due to the distance and the problems getting there. The group was not prepared for an over night stay and had no tents, sleeping bags or personal items nor adequate drinking water or food. By that afternoon half the group built 20 benches for the church while the other men welded the rafters and screwed the tin on the roof. It was completed by dark. The team was able to sleep on the wooden benches that they had made for the local congregation. The temperature was very cool in the mountains that night and no one got much rest.

The local people of Seclum provided a nice breakfast that morning. The men immediately started mixing the cement for the church floor. By mid day the work was completed and the group began their return trip to Chenalho. The difficulty of getting the van out of the rough, mountain terrain and the bad road conditions started all over again. Local villagers cut plants and brush to lay in the road for the van tires to have enough grip to get up the steep inclines. Everyone was happy to return to the ministry facility in Chenalho after being in the remote mountains of Chiapas. Our teams always feel like the facility in Chenalho is so nice after enduring such difficult conditions, and it is then referred to as the Chenalho Hilton.

The men also assisted in other work projects that week - pouring a sidewalk at the medical clinic and digging and pouring cement for the footings for the expansion of the stadium to house more people for our general conventions.

The group ended their week with a trip to the Tuxtla orphanage, Casa Hogar Alegre. Later that day the team went to Walmart and bought around 20 soccer and basketballs for the kids.
